Many warehouses track rated equipment power, but rarely ask a more useful question: how much energy does it take to move one parcel or complete one order? Total power tells us what a machine can consume; it does not tell us whether the operation is efficient.
Useful measures include energy per parcel, energy per order, idle running time, standby consumption and wasted energy during blockages. Conveyor systems can improve through zone control based on parcel presence, standby modes during low volume, variable-speed control, and comparisons between energy data, order volume, equipment state and shift pattern.
Energy efficiency does not always require more complex equipment. Sometimes it starts with preventing an existing system from running at full speed when there is nothing to move.
When a customer asks, “How fast is the system?”, we should also answer, “How many kWh does it use per order?” Do you track kWh per order?
