• Peak-season surcharges
• Late shipments and customer service tickets
• Minimum monthly charges
• Extra labor required to manage exceptions

A provider with a lower unit price can still be more expensive if the operation creates more touches, more delays, and more manual follow-up.

A fairer way to compare 3PLs

That number is more useful than the pick fee alone. It connects labor, process quality, service level, and customer experience in one view.

Process design shapes hidden costs

If multi-item orders require repeated walking, manual sorting, and additional checking, the visible fee may stay low while the hidden cost keeps growing. The best fulfillment operation is not necessarily the one with the lowest rate card. It is the one that produces reliable orders with fewer unnecessary touches.
