The Hidden Attack Surface of a Smart Warehouse

Warehouse cybersecurity may sound like an IT issue, but in an automated facility it eventually becomes an operations issue.

A wrong scan can change inventory. A bad interface message can route an order to the wrong work area. A network outage can leave the equipment state and the WMS state out of sync. Less visible risks include shared logins, excessive permissions, remote service access and incomplete reconciliation after recovery.

Several questions belong in the early project discussion: Does every device and user have the minimum required permission? Are critical actions recorded? Are IT and operational control networks appropriately segmented? Which tasks can be safely buffered during an outage? How are inventory, order and equipment states reconciled after recovery?

Automation should make every movement explainable, verifiable and recoverable.

Who owns OT security in your operation: IT, engineering, operations—or all three?
