The Hidden Cost of Touches per Order

Technical insight ยท September 2, 2026

Most warehouses measure orders shipped, labor hours, and order accuracy. There is another metric worth watching: how many times is each order touched before it leaves the building?

HummiSort reduces unnecessary order touches and handoffs

Every extra touch adds cost

An order may be picked into a tote, moved to temporary staging, sorted into an order location, checked again, moved to packing, and reworked after an exception.

The same headcount does not guarantee the same output

Two warehouses with the same number of employees can have very different output. One may be moving orders forward. The other may be repeatedly re-handling them.

The most useful improvement is not always a faster picker. Sometimes it is removing the second or third touch that should never have existed.

Make the order flow clearer

Scan-guided order consolidation and an automated put wall can clarify the handoff: pick the batch, identify the item, direct it to the correct order location, and move the completed order forward with less re-handling.

A question worth asking: What is the average number of touches per order in your operation, and which touch would you remove first?

Remove unnecessary order handoffs

BDAITEC HummiSort combines scan-guided consolidation with automated put-wall sorting to help eCommerce and 3PL warehouses reduce re-handling and move completed orders smoothly toward packing and dispatch.
