Automation can reduce manual handling, but it does not automatically remove safety risk. The most difficult moments are often outside the standard cycle: a person crossing the equipment zone, a technician opening a guard, an operator removing an exception parcel, a night-shift employee clearing a jam, or a forklift sharing space with a conveyor.
Safety therefore belongs in the design phase. Which areas can people enter while the system is running? Who clears a jam? Is there enough maintenance access? How does the system reset after an emergency stop? Are normal and exception flows physically separated?
Guardrails, light curtains, safety gates, emergency stops and visual warnings are part of the sortation system. Mature automation gives people a clear and safe path to intervene only where judgment is needed.
